Yet another SIM card mod for your cell phone. Roaming is an old problem, and roaming SIMs have been a long-time solution. MAXroam is currently available for almost 150 countries and counting, and allows users up to 50 phone numbers, automatic topping-off, voicemail, and free call forwarding to any international number for users in the US.
After paying an initial €29.99 ($42.52) for the SIM card, users are charged €1/month if they don’t use the SIM. When they do, roaming rates vary based on where they are calling to and from. For example, someone roaming in China and calling a landline phone in Japan would be charged €0.79/minute ($1.12/min). Someone roaming in the US and receiving a call from Spain, however, would be charged €1.10/per minute ($1.56/min).
Usage of MAXroam requires a SIM compatible, unlocked phone that uses GSM. All-in-all, someone who doesn’t constantly travel the world probably wouldn’t benefit from investing in a SIM at all, but MAXroam may actually be better for those who travel only occasionally—those who travel often will probably be looking for better rates than $1.12/minute and may find having country-specific roaming SIMs to be more beneficial in the long run. With that said, MAXroam doesn’t seem to be a bad deal, but it certainly isn’t at the top of my list. Learn more at www.maxroam.com
