Bang & Olufsen iPod challenge

The recent addition to Bang and Olufsen’s range, the Beosound 6 is a clear challenge to the iPod nano. With 4gb of internal memory, USB connection, and color screen, the BEO6 is a new direction for the Scandinavian manufacturer. But, with a price tag of around $600, it remains to be seen whether this is a realistic challenge.

Bang & Olufsen have a strong reputation for quality, but this particular product is based around the Samsung YP-Z5 MP3 player and shares the same control interface, which is perhaps not it’s major selling point. It does look pretty though, and the designers have gone to some trouble to make it match B&Os usual designs.

According to B&O’s press release, the Beosound 6 is made from polished steel and “If you find yourself in adverse conditions like an ocean squall or a New York subway car, you will appreciate the grip of the soft-coated back and the decisive operation of the large buttons. The sturdy construction is thoroughly tested to survive accidental drops, scratches from the things that live in handbags, freezing cold, searing heat and the sweaty palms of your jealous friends.”

Hmmm, that sound like another challenge to me. Will it pass the Knowles destructo-test? Watch this space.

For me, one of the most appealing features is that it includes a set of B&O A8 earphones, possibly the sexiest earphones on the planet. Although I’m open to hearing other people’s preferences.
