SMOz—Be Gone, Messy Start Menus
When I use a computer, I like everything to look nice and neat. Cluttered desktops and toolbars annoy me to no end. I, personally, use a shell to fix this problem, but for times when I’m forced to face Windows XP in all its disorganized glory, SMOz is my new best friend.
SMOz stands for Start Menu Organizer, and that’s exactly what it is. You can use SMOz to categorize everything in your Start Menu so that you don’t have to search through a two columns long list to find what you’re looking for. It includes an easily customizable template so that you can put things where you want them and know they’ll stay there, even if you have to reinstall Windows. The interface is very user-friendly and the file is small—I downloaded and installed it in less than a minute. Obviously, the main drawback is the fact that there are still bugs, but these can be easily reported so they can be fixed for the next release.
SMOz 0.7.0.1, the latest release, was completely rewritten and is tested to work with Windows XP. SMOz, developed by Nithin Phillips, is a SourceForge project and is available for download at smoz.sourceforge.net/.

When I use windows, I use launchy - it’s like katapult for kde - indexes the start menu and gives you options as you type the letters of any program. For me it’s much faster to type a couple of letters than look through the whole start menu.
