Canon TX1

Is it a camcorder or is it a digital camera? The Canon Powershot TX1 almost defies description, but if you are looking for high resolution combined with HD movie capability for less than $500, this is probably the camera for you.

Canon has a great reputation in the trade for producing solid, reliable equipment that needs very little in the way of maintenance.

With Canon’s new Face Detection AF/AE/FE function, the TX1 can detect, lock on, and track more than one human face in a scene. The face detection algorithm automatically prioritizes and selects faces (based on Canon’s Intelligent Scene Analysis/iSAPS technology). It then optimizes the focus, exposure and flash, resulting in flattering portraits and group shots where all of the subjects are in clearer focus and accurately exposed.

The TX1 also boasts CD quality stereo sound recording and a 10X digital zoom with image stabilization. On top of being capable of recording widescreen 720p HD movies at a rate of 30 fps for stunning High Definition clarity, the TX1 also shoots high-quality VGA (640 x 480 pixels) movies at 30 fps (in a traditional 4:3 aspect ratio) with the option of shooting at 30 fps or 60 fps in the QVGA 320 x 240-pixel setting (also in 4:3 format).

Too many features? Not to worry, the TX1’s interface is user friendly, intuitive and easily switched between functions. Considering the range of features, I expected a much bigger package, but Canon managed to shoehorn the whole package into less than 8 ounces. Memory options include SD memory card, SDHC memory card, MultiMediaCard and MMC Plus card.
