Throwback Tech: The Stick

Posted on 15 October 2007 by TheGrizz

Welcome to the first installment of the weekly (I hope!) feature Throwback Tech. In this little feature we will take a look at the great technological innovations of the past. Indeed we will endeavor to bring to you long forgotten lore. We will examine the very beginnings of the tech race reaching back to when humanity first learned that opposable thumbs where useful for more than hanging from a branch.

This week we cover perhaps the single greatest innovation in the whole history of humanity; The Stick! That is right; this technological wonder is what transformed our long forgotten ancestors from simple tree swinging apes into apes with tools! This innovation allowed us a whole new level of comfort and security. No longer did larger animals have the advantage, one good hit with a stick and that saber tooth was sure to run. Had a problem with a neighbor, the stick made him a problem no longer. She wasn’t in the mood, hardly mattered when you had a stick handy.

Not only was the stick a great piece of technology in the past, it is in widespread use in the world today. Imagine trying to use a shovel without the stick! Imagine pushing brooms, mopping, or even playing the first video games without this handy little tool. Yes indeed we as a race owe a great debt to that first ape who decided that the world could be a better place with the stick.

That’s it for this week people, however next week will bring another exciting issue of throwback tech where we will examine another great piece of technology; The Rock!

Got any other “throwback tech” you would like us to cover?
