iLife ’08-iWeb Review

Posted on 18 October 2007 by JoCoWash

Most consumers are moving towards the digital life, so it only makes sense to create programs for that lifestyle. iLife is one of those programs. And iLife isn’t one giant program as some may think; iLife is composed of five applications – iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, iDVD and Garage Band. These applications are designed to help you and your digital lifestyle, and they do so with Apple style—beauty and simplicity. This is the second part of my review on the iWeb application for iLife ’08.

iWeb is great tool for users who are just starting out on the web. iWeb allows you to create web pages and post them to your .Mac account. The biggest feature is widgets. Much like the Mac OS, you can have a Google Maps widget on your website for a party or embed the URL that YouTube provides. The other new features are a media index page. So instead of 20 albums in the navigation area, you get a “photographs” webpage that will include all the photos you want to share, along with theme switching, personal domain support and Google AdSense to add a cash flow to your website too. That is good, but I would rather not have AdSence on every personal site.

I recently just found out despite what others say, you do not have to use .Mac to publish your iWeb site to the web. You can use .Mac, but you can also choose the “Publish to Folder” option that will save all the necessary files for your site in a folder on your Mac.

One complaint I have is that the templates seem to be focused on building sites for photographers. I love photography, and that is dandy for photographers, but I would also like to see a few more themes in the future.

iWeb ‘08 has received a slight upgrade over the ‘06 version of the software that I once owned. You will definitely love the new features added. Overall, I really like iWeb and if anything, I will produce a stunning photography website. Be sure to check back for the three remaining iLife ’08 application reviews.
