Sprint Unveils Touch-Screen Phone

With touch-screens being the new thing in cell phone technology, there is only a matter of time before all major cell phone companies’ start pushing them out. Sprint Nextel Corp. announced on Wednesday that it is jumping on the bandwagon with the Touch by HTC. Like Apple’s iPhone, this smart phone has only a few buttons and is designed to be controlled by touching the screen.

The announcement makes Sprint the third of the three largest U.S. wireless carriers to introduce a cell phone with a large touch screen designed to be controlled with fingers. The iPhone, which launched June 29, is exclusive to AT&T and Verizon Wireless said two weeks ago that it would introduce the LG Voyager in time for Thanksgiving.

Beyond the touch-screen interface, the Touch’s similarities with the iPhone are pretty much the same. It does not have a large amount of built-in memory for music and movies. It is said and looks to be smaller and lighter, with a screen measuring 2.8 inches diagonally.

The Touch uses Sprint’s relatively fast data network, rather than the iPhone’s combination of a slow AT&T network supplemented by fast Wi-Fi. I suspect that there may be a little confusion as Apple has a product called the iPod Touch.

At $249.99, Touch has a lower price tag than iPhone’s $399.
