iLife ‘08-iMovie Review

Posted on 22 October 2007 by JoCoWash

Most consumers are moving towards the digital life, so it only makes since to create programs for the lifestyle. iLife is one of those programs. And iLife isn’t one giant program as some may think; iLife is composed of five applications – iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, iDVD and Garage Band. These applications are designed to help you and your digital lifestyle, and they do so with Apple style-beauty and simplicity. This is the third part of my review on the iMovie application for iLife ‘08.

The iMovie ‘08 application reminds me of a Silverlight demo I saw around the time Microsoft announced it, except the iMovie application is far more advanced. iMovie integrates with .Mac as well (Like iPhoto), allowing you to upload your completed movies to your .Mac account and show up with your iPhoto events. You can also publish to iTunes for iPods, iPhones and AppleTV, and upload to YouTube with a built-in one click upload option.

I think that this is the biggest change to the iLife suite this year. iMovie looks like a completely different application when compared with previous versions. I found myself having to relearn all over again. iMovie ‘08 is designed for you to quickly gather a movie or two from all of your personal video footage. It is very much an iPhoto. While using the application, I was able to create a 5 minute movie of my cat and merging it with another video of trees in a matter of minutes. From start to finish, my entire project took less than 30 minutes to complete. That is of course, after I got the hang of things and finished playing around with features.

If you are familiar with previous versions of iMovie, then you will love it. I find the application to be very easy to use. Of course, you probably won’t be able to make an epic masterpiece, but you’ll be able to put the footage together in a pleasing way, and fast.

A few problems I had with iMovie was adding audio. I found it rather difficult to add audio to my movies. This is complicated compared to the rest of the program. This isn’t going to keep me from using it of course. I’ll just have to do more work. No biggie. Great program overall, and if you want to go ahead and purchase the iLife ‘08 suite, you will be given the opportunity to download iMovie HD for free! iMovie HD offers some of you advanced users an opportunity to produce close to epic masterpieces.

Be sure to check back for the two remaining iLife ‘08 application reviews.

you will not going to love imovie 08, you going to hate it … if you already worked with version 06. you cannot adjust clip sound individually. you cannot make chapters for idvd and you cannot export directly to idvd as before. why do apple do this to us? this is a downgrade not a upgrade!
