Throwback Tech: Clothes

There we were, early humans, apes with large frontal lobes, sticks, and rocks. However we were still limited in our place as the most dominant species on the planet because we still relied on natural warmth to protect us and were ill suited for colder climes. Yet to embrace out chosen destiny to become the undisputed top of the food chain, we needed to find a way to live in cold weather.

Then it dawned on George that other animals with fur were able to live in cold climates. So grabbing his trusty stick and rock, he went out and clobbered the first large furry animal he found. He then took the skin off the animal, threw it over himself and discovered yes indeed it was their skin that kept them warm when it was cold. George went and showed his friends and soon apes with rocks and sticks were assaulting large furry animals, medium furry animals, small furry animals and even the occasional animal without fur, all in the quest for their skin.

While the discovery of this technology did indeed enable our early ancestors to move both north and south of the equator, there was a huge drawback that did not become readily apparent. If everyone was wearing clothes, how could we see each other naked? If we couldn’t see each other naked, maybe we needed to rethink this whole wearing clothes thing. Then another discovery was made, we no longer had to see the people we didn’t want to see naked either!

Now not only could we live in areas with colder climates, we also no longer were subject to the site of the human body as it exited its prime. Now clothing has become about peagentry and decoration it provides have driven both men and women to the brink of insanity and beyond. We owe a lot to clothes and that is why clothing is this weeks throwback tech .
