AirBox CM3 Mobile Router

Posted on 10 November 2007 by Mark Knowles

Five hundred bucks for a wireless router? Experience the ease and convenience of a reliable, always-on Internet connection everywhere you go, with the patent-pending AirBox CM3. Unlike most wireless routers, the CM3 keeps you connected while in transit and turns any vehicle into a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

Based on WAAV’s popular WavBoard™ EV1, which was the world’s first broadband router designed for vehicles, the AirBox CM3 is designed to maintain a broadband connection while in a moving vehicle. The mobile router provides a connection similar to cable or DSL, and even allows multiple devices such as PDA’s, laptops and gaming consoles to be connected online simultaneously. Talk about giving your kids something new to argue about in the back seats.

According to the manufacturers, the CM3 has been “Proven reliable at over 100 mph.” Users plug directly into the router using Ethernet or by connecting wireless via Wi-Fi. Even if the vehicle is stopped, the wireless connection will remain available up to 300′ away.

This router will work inside as well, has a GPS option that allows you to view your vehicle on Google Maps or Google Earth. The full data sheet is available for PDF download here, but $500 seems like an awful lot of money to me. Cheaper than a satellite link I guess?
