I don’t want to rain on anyone’s parade (actually, that’s not true) but what on earth is the point of this thing? If it’s illegal to use a cell phone, how on earth can it be legal to watch a DVD while you drive down the road. And even if it wasn’t illegal, who in their right mind installs one of these? It’s even got a remote control.

Samsung GX 20 Announced

Posted on 26 January 2008 by Mark Knowles

Unofficial information reveals that the new Samsung GX20 digital SLR camera offers Live View; a function that is becoming more and more popular these days. DSLR manufacturers seem to have quickly adopted Live View from out of the blue and it looks like it is a must for every manufacturer to equip a new DSLR with Live View. Live View mode is offered through the 2.7 inch monitor on the back of the camera. We’ll have to be patient a little while longer before being able to get all the details of Live View on the Samsung GX20 but undoubtedly more information will be given soon.

The introduction of the Samsung GX-20 is not completely unexpected; it is more or less obvious Samsung would come out with a new DSLR. People keep mumbling about Samsung being a ‘sleeping giant’ and once awake could change the order in the DSLR market completely, although that’s unlikely, they simply don’t have the reputation and range of reliable accessories needed and do we really need another high end camera on an already over supplied market? But maybe the new Samsung GX-20 will change my perception.

Lets face it, Schneider lenses are some of the best, but it will still say Samsung on the box and do I really want a camera made by a dish washer manufacturer? Nah, don’t think so.

Canon Rebel XSi 450D

Posted on 25 January 2008 by Mark Knowles

Yet another new Digital SLR hits the streets. But this one is a little different. For a start, it’s very affordable for a DSLR and 12.2 megapixels for less than $800 sounds like a good deal to me.

If you are a Canon fan and looking for a low priced Digital Single Lens Reflex camera, I suspect this is going to be for you.

Fully compatible with the full range of EF lenses, a specification sheet longer than my…. It’s typical Canon styling and although I haven’t got my hands on one yet, I think it will be as well built as we have come to expect from Canon.

One of the good things about the upcoming release at this price, is we will likely see similar efforts from all the other camera maker, so expect a sub $800 DSRL from Nikon, Olympus and all the other manufacturers.

Anything that brings the price of these cameras down is a good thing in my opinion. This one should last a long time too. Canon are famous for making solid, long-lasting equipment. There is an interesting, deeper look at the Canon XSi 450D here. Everyone I talk to is excited about this one.

Apple MacBook Air

Posted on 24 January 2008 by Mark Knowles

Hot, hot, hot – thin, thin, thin. Apple’s new laptop computer once again shakes the technology world’s foundations and it looks as though Apple is trying to do to laptops what they did to cell phones with the iPhone.

Not quite the same, because this new laptop is pretty much the same as all the other laptops – just thinner.

It certainly is a fine looking machine, but I have a feeling there are going to be some issues with longevity with this one. At least the iPhone was step forward in technology and the only thing I can say about the macbook air is – it’s thin.

There is no denying it’s an extremely nice looking piece of equipment. The technological specs look good, but I wonder at the point of making it this thin – is it worth the money? What do you all think?

Is three grand for a computer with a life span of about two years worth the investment?

Some think not, and there is a good opinion on the Macbook air here. Others think this is the best thing since sliced bread and there is another alternative opinion here. But I am interested to know what you, the readers think. Leave me a comment and let me know

ION iTTUSB Turntable

Posted on 23 January 2008 by Mark Knowles

The ion TTB turntable allows you to transfer your music from vinyl – LPs 45s and even 78s – to your computer’s music library.

They can be converted directly to CD or MP3 with the included recording software. The ION TTUSB also features a switchable phono/line level output for connecting to any home stereo with an AUX input.

Included is ion’s EZ Vinyl Converter 2 for PC (EZVC2) and EZ Audio Converter for Mac (EZAC); according to ion, it’s the best way to record and convert vinyl directly to iTunes. EZVC2 features Gracenote® MusicID technology, which analyzes your vinyl and automatically retrieves album, artist and song information for you! EZAC lets you easily enter track information.

Included Audacity software enables you to edit and clean your recorded tracks although part of the appeal is the old hissing and scratching of a well used LP.

For once, I like a gadget, although this is perhaps not the best turntable for actually playing your old records on, it certainly works well to transfer them to a digital file.

Play that funky music and boogie on down to the disco beat. There is a good guide to this and other turntables that will allow you to transfer your vinyl LPs and 45s to digital media here.
