Ducati SanDisk

Posted on 01 December 2007 by Mark Knowles

What do a Ducati MotoGP bike and a flash memory card have in common? – They’re both red, they’re both the fastest in their class and they both say Sandisk on the side.

Press release: “SanDisk teamed with world-renowned motorcycle designer, Ducati, to launch their most ambitious set of digital flash memory products to date. Echoing the speed, performance, and styling of Ducati’s legendary, racing-inspired motorcycles, SanDisk proudly presents the Extreme® Ducati Edition. This label is reserved for some of the fastest memory products SanDisk, or the industry, has ever produced. This exclusive, collectible product line will only be available for a limited time, and only from specialized retail establishments.”

Ducati’s MotoGP stars Casey Stoner and Loris Capirossi looked on while Sandisk also released their fastest ever SD and CompactFlash cards on the eve of the MotoGP championship round at Laguna Seca, California.

The grid consists of 4- and 8-gigabyte capacities for the SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition CompactFlash card and 4GB for the SanDisk Extreme Ducati Edition SD Plus card. The latter features a snap-open connector that enables the card to be plugged in directly to the USB port of a personal computer without requiring a cable or reader.

Maybe not quite 200 mph, but these things are pretty quick. I wonder if the girls’ tattoos are permanent? Looks like the perfect Christmas gift for the computer buff in your life. My Christmas list gets bigger. I would even like one of the cards.

Twenty four Grand for a phone ?

Posted on 27 November 2007 by Mark Knowles

The latest addition to British bling-meister amosu’s ridiculously expensive, blinged-out gadget range is the diamond encrusted 18-carat-gold Nokia N95. Only 10 of these diamond Nokia N95’s will be made, each numbered, strangely enough, from 1-10.

Each phone is made to the customer’s requirement and is uniquely different either by the color of the diamonds or a choice of solid classic or white gold. This is truly an exclusive and impressive luxury phone “piece.”

It does make you wonder what the world is coming to when a phone is referred to as a “piece,” and we have a feeling these particular pieces are going to go out of date about as quickly as it takes Nokia to come out with a new flagship model phone, but no doubt the 10 lucky footballer’s wives who get these in their Christmas box will be more than happy to flaunt it at the local supermarket for a few months until then. “Is that LAST year’s Nokia, darling ?”

The technical specs for the most expensive Nokia N95 can be found here, and Flawless & Co, British retailer stocking them is here. For those of you not familiar with London’s various addresses, for New Bond Street, think Rodeo Drive with real English accents and snottier sales staff.

Clix Armband

Posted on 20 November 2007 by Mark Knowles

This is the very latest accessory from iRiver, a leading company in the global portable device market and Microsoft’s strategic partner in the development of their next-generation digital portable player, the PMC.

From the company that created the thinnest MP3 player in the world, we have this incredibly cool new armband for MP3 players which consists of a crystal case and a stylish band, which can be cut to specifically match the diameter of your arm with a clip system securing the band.

The iRiver Clix Armband kit has been designed to work with the the latest Clix media players. It is available for shipping as of today for a cost of 16,800 won – $18 if you were wondering. So with international postage, anti-terrorism taxes and a kickback to the North Koreans, that should equal about six hundred bucks.

For now, there are no plans to ship to the USA, although the iRiver Clix MP3 player is available from Amazon.com for the bargain price of $239. As and when there are plans to sell it in the US, you’ll be the first to know. Less is definitely more in the case of the Clix armband and with all things UnObtanium, you will have to make do with the slideshow for now. The manufacturer’s website is here.

Otterbox iPhone cases – they’re not waterproof

Posted on 18 November 2007 by Mark Knowles

It must be tough being the copywriter for some things. What do you say about an iPhone case? It’s tough, it’s rugged and it keeps the dust out? OK, done, now what?

Otterbox are having the same problem with their truly splendiferous iPhone case – or should that be magnificent? Sure it’s a good case, and it protects the phone but they manage to tell you no less than three times in two hundred words that the damn thing is NOT waterproof. Let’s see if I can beat that.

OK, I get it already, it’s not water proof. Even though it looks waterproof, and at fifty bucks for a plastic case, it surely ought to be water proof. But it’s only “water resistant” and let’s face it a paper bag is “water resistant.”

It’s a nice looking case nonetheless and the main purpose it serves is to prevent that huge piece of glass on Apple’s iPhone from getting scratched too much. The Otterbox “semi-rugged,” case should be able to do that. Did I mention it’s not waterproof?

The manufacturer’s water resistant, semi-rugged, partially hydrogenated website is here, but you should be able to pick one up on Amazon pretty soon. Just don’t go swimming with it – because it’s not waterproof.

Most expensive MP3 player?

Posted on 30 October 2007 by Mark Knowles

Gresso’s collection of ultra-exclusive MP3 players is aimed solidly at customers who demand the ultimate in craftsmanship and unusual design – and who don’t care how much it costs. Four Symphonia models will be released in 2007, all made from some combination of Blackwood, White Gold, and/or Pink Gold, and all with the same ancient Blackwood and 18 carat gold in each case. Prices will range from $4000 to $6500.

If that seems like an awful lot of money for an MP3 player, just remember that there is a limited amount of African Blackwood available and there aren’t many MP3 players out there made with gold.

All models of the Gresso Symphonia Collection have the same tetrahedral case, which measures a diminutive 39 x 39 x 10.5 mm, allowing the device to be worn as jewelry, should you so desire. In “real money” the measurements equate to 1 ½ inches by 1 ½ inches by 1/3rd inch, or about the same size as a box of matches.

The keyboard has a special, patented, scratch-resistant covering which the company claims is as hard as diamond. The figures and letters on the keyboard are cut by an ultra-precise laser. At least they shied away from Roman numerals, unlike their range of phones. The Gresso Symphonia range comes with built-in FM tuner and a measly 1 Gb of internal flash memory, and supports MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG music formats. Anyone buying one of these is likely buying it for show rather than as a serious MP3 player. Let’s face it, this thing makes just about any other MP3 player on the market seem cheap. The full specs are available here. But anyone in the market for a less expensive alternative can look here:
