Figuring YouFig Out

Posted on 07 February 2008 by Nion

With the sad demise of Jonkenpon and 8apps along with it, some people—myself included—may be looking for a new collaborative social network. While there are still plenty out there to choose from—such as 37signal’s BaseCamp–those looking to jump in on one that has yet to become full of members just looking to get in on the next new web app may want to consider giving YouFig a go.

YouFig describes itself as Demo Collaboration Community, aiming to connect those with common interests. Pretty simple, right? That’s the point. YouFig achieves its goal in the simplest way possible: by helping people find others to discuss their interests with and to provide them with a Workspace in which to do it. YouFig has twenty-four categories and multiple sub-categories in each, for a grand total of more than 200 individual interests. Each member is allowed up to ten tags and ten categories to define their interests and specialties. YouFig will look for Workspaces that might interest you and allow you to search for Workspaces and people by category or, of course, start a new Workspace and invite new collaborators to YouFig. You can also add collaborators to your network and keep tabs on what they’re up to. By being active in the community, which includes starting, joining, voting, or collaborating on a workspace, inviting others to join, and referring collaborators, members can earn points which can be exchanged for prizes later on.

Naturally, Workspaces are a vital part of YouFig. They are where people connect, discuss, and share information on their common interest. Being in private beta, the demo version of YouFig doesn’t actually have many collaborators to contribute, making the community seem somewhat weak at times. However, YouFig was created to provide a collaborative application to organizations that need one, such as schools, corporations, and research groups. Customized communities can be ordered for free.

So what do I think of YouFig? Well it doesn’t impress me. It hasn’t drawn me into a rich community of people who share any of my obscure interests. Then again, neither have any other collaborative networks or social networks in general. Then again, when you consider the fact that there are only about 500 members taking part in the private beta demo and that several of them are inactive, you can only expect so much. I think YouFig has great potential, but it requires either a large userbase or use by a private organization to really live up to it. Then again, YouFig was not really meant to be like the larger social networks. In fact, it boasts the fact that there is “no social network required.”

If you would like to learn more, you can read Mashable’s review or visit the YouFig website. Keep in mind that this web app is still in private beta, so you’ll have to request an invite to join! Or, if you’re part of an organization that is looking for a collaborative application, go here to place an order for free.

Zoho giving google docs a good run

Posted on 05 November 2007 by TheGrizz

I covered google docs in this post, since then I have been keeping an eye out for another application that has as much to offer someone wishing to bring more of their work online. The good news is that I think I found one, the bad news, with so much of my stuff invested into google docs I am not sure that Zoho provides enough reason for me to switch. However for those of you who are about to make the jump from desktop applications to online document use, Zoho may be your answer.

While both google and Zoho offer very similar services there are some that only Zoho offers and others that only google offers. Both offer the following: Word Processor, spreadsheet, slideshow, web clippings, email, chat, wiki (google uses Jot), and web conferencing. What only google has: Web site hosting and feed reader. What only Zoho has: Database application, Online database, project management and customer relationship manger. I think the main difference between the two is that Zoho appears to be more business oriented while google remains strongly consumer driven.

While time will only tell if Zoho will be competitive against the juggernaut that is google, however if you are someone looking for a new place to store your work online, Zoho is worth the time it takes to explore it a little. I like Zoho a lot and if in the future I find that google does not meet all my needs I will definantly give them a shot. You can check out Zoho here, registration and use is free unless you opt for their Zoho business which runs $40 per user per year.

Famundo is myspace for the entire family

Posted on 01 November 2007 by TheGrizz

Of all the social networking sites, applications, and other things available on the internet, I have often wondered when one focused on being something the entire family can use and benefit from would show up. Well it finally has and it bears the name Famundo. This site is absolutely wonderful and is really something almost the entire family can enjoy. From its calendar that allows each family member to post their appointments, to the family library where everyone can share blogs, papers and a mess of other things, there is no shortage of ways to involve the family on this website.

While the site is great for use by the family, it also has an added benefit of social networking. Say for instance you have a far flung extended family, well now they have a site they can visit that allows them to not only see what your family is up to, but to leave comments as well, also they can start their own Famundo page so you can keep tabs on them as well. Another great feature of the site is that you can also create personal web pages. This allows you and the rest of your family to have a special place on the internet in a family safe environment.

I actually have no complaints about this page, and intend to make full use of it. Feel free to get your own family page at Famundo . Also you can watch a great how to video here.

Ace Your Interview with InterviewUp

Posted on 28 October 2007 by T.W. Garrett

Most of us know that the first hurdle of landing a job is getting an interview; however, the more difficult hurdle to jump is acing the interview and coming across as an intelligent, hire-worthy individual. There is thick competition in the job market these days and it’s best to prepare yourself thoroughly before stepping foot into an office for an interview. InterviewUp is a helpful site that allows users to post common or unusual interview questions in hopes of receiving a good answer that is memorable and useful when the time comes. Users can also respond to others’ questions with helpful answers as well.

I browsed around the site and within seconds I found several questions that I have been asked at one time or another and I found myself eagerly clicking on them to find what others have replied with. It is interesting collaborating on this type of information because seeing other answers can help you contour your own response and relate it to moments in your career that you may not have remembered if you were asked the question on the spot.

InterviewUp is a very basic site – not a lot of bells and whistles. However, it serves its purpose and can be very helpful if you are currently seeking a new career. The service is completely free and enables you to save questions, answers and replies for you to review at any time.

Check out InterviewUp
