The five best little things on the web

Posted on 12 February 2008 by TheGrizz

Each day I come across some very wonderful sites that each deserve some recognition. Some I find from other sites such as lifehacker and tech crunch, others I find from the other writers here at the tech brief. However the main reason I don’t cover many of the smallest sites out there is because they just don’t have enough to them to justify a full post. Well I decided that I would compile my list of the best little sites on the web. These sites are all relatively small and offer very few services (generally just one or two) However they are great sites that could help some you out.

Shipgooder (beta) is awesome. You simply type in the information required and bam it will give you the cheapest shipping rate available. What is better is it actually gives you a table that you can compare shipping cost and time. If you do a lot of shipping Shipgooder could be your next best friend.

You can learn more about shipgooder (beta) over at this post on Lifehacker.

I found out about his fun little site over at lifehacker too. I like to change my wall paper a lot. With social wallpapering, the quest for good looking wall paper for your computer just got a little bit easier. With hundreds of images to browse through, I am sure you can find something that suits your fancy at the moment. However I have to admit that this site will remain kind of limited until it gets well known and more images become available. However I have every belief that it will be around for quite some time. check out social wall papering here.

If you are about to embark upon a major life changing event, you might want to set your browser over the first thirty days (beta). This site is designed to help people out during their first thirty days of making a massive changes such as buying a home, going green, loosing weight etc. Basically it’s there to offer encouragement and advice so that anyone making a change feels like they have some support. Again this is one of those time will tell kind of ideas, but I like the idea, and could actually find some use for it. you can read more about it over at this post at the tech crunch or visit the site here.

Now this site is just plain fun. You go to tipjoy, get a button, place the button on your blog or website and are pretty much ready to start receiving tips. While I seriously doubt this will lead to the next mogul blogger, I do think that it is something a lot of indy bloggers could find a lot of use for. The service is still very new, but I think they got a great idea and if enough people get behind it, I think we will start seeing tip jars all over the blogosphere. check them out at here.

Have you ever agonized over the decision of booking a plane ticket while wondering if now was the best time to buy, or is you should wait?  Well if you have, perhaps you would like to shoot over to Farcast.com.  This site makes it possible for you to know wether or not a fare will likely remain the same, go higher, or go lower.  I gave them a quick try and found that they actually have some pretty good information behind their predictions.  So next time you are planning a trip I would recommend you head over to Farecast.

So that is it for today.  I hope you find at least one of these little places on the web to be worth visiting.  Also if you happen to know of other little places, feel free to let us know.

The best deal on flights, hotel with Farecast

Posted on 15 November 2007 by T.W. Garrett

When is the last time that you bought an airline ticket? Chances are, with rising gas prices, you may be choosing to fly to your destination rather than fly. However, buying an airline ticket can be tedious. There are so many airlines to choose from and there is much speculation on when the best time to buy is. It is the worst feeling if you buy an airline ticket – only to see it offered a week later at a several hundred dollar discount.

Farecast is a Website that can help and was rated one of ‘PC Worlds 20 Most Innovative Products.’ I think it is a very useful tool, as I fly quite often and need fare discounts whenever they drop. The interesting thing about Farecast is that it is different from other fare searching sites because it actually helps you decide whether or not you should wait due to an expected decrease in fare. Farecast also tells you if it is a good time to buy because it predicts that the fare will rise. The predictions are shown through a seven day window which is a good span of time when purchasing a ticket.

Farecast doesn’t just tell you “buy” or “wait”, it actually will give you a confidence level, backing up their prediction and suggestions for your purchase.

Another awesome aspect of Farecast is the Hotel Rate Key which assists you finding the best hotel at the best price. You can type in a location that you would like to stay in and an interactive map shows you all of the hotels in the area, with arrows depicting the current available prices. Farecast keeps track of the hotel prices that are given and they are in turn, able to inform you whether or not the current price is a deal or not.

Farecast is great and they are not travel agency that is looking for a cut of the price. It is an honest site looking to provide consumers with the best price….it is about time!
