Become A Star with GotCast

Posted on 29 November 2007 by JoCoWash

lights.jpgI have always wanted to become a model or an actor, but because of my location, it is a little difficult. I gave up that aspiration, but then I came across an interesting site.

Has being an actor been a dream of yours, like mine? Well it is time to make that dream a reality at GotCast.com. GotCast.com gives everyone the opportunity to be discovered. Getting involved in the entertainment business is almost impossible and not everyone can afford to drop everything and move to Hollywood.

This site allows you to get noticed by casting directors without having to leave your home. Register and create a profile to get noticed and get a break. Your profile includes photos of yourself a short description about you and a video where you can let people get a better idea of your character. Once you have a profile the goal is to get as many people as possible to vote for you. The 10 users with the most votes will be submitted to a final round where casting directors will choose one person for an acting role or opportunity…I have no votes :(

GotCast.com is also a great site for entertainment directors looking for talent. Once you are on the site you can browse through all of the users and find the perfect face for your show. GotCast.com is beneficial for both aspiring actors and casting directors.

What I don’t like about the site is the fact that it is basically a popularity contest. The most popular, the most successful. Something of which, I am not. GotCast has nothing to do with talent. GotCast could have the profile information geared more towards acting and entertainment experience. Either way, it is fun to join, free, so post a few pictures; maybe a video to see what responses you get.

Be a ‘Movie God’ on FilmCrave

Posted on 12 November 2007 by T.W. Garrett

FilmCrave is a Website that allows wannabe movie critics to create longs lists of movies which they’ve seen and order them in regards to favorites. You earn points based on how many lists you create and the size of movie reviews that you write. However, don’t bother writing movie reviews unless you are good at it. FilmCrave has a site disclaimer that states that they might remove your review if it isn’t useful, contains offensive content and/or contains false information.

You are also able to make friends on FilmCrave. Once you’ve established a friendship, you can chat and recommend movies to your pals. There is an interesting FilmCrave members sections that you can strive to be a part of if you wish.

Members are ranked on a point scale, based on how active individual members are. You begin as an “Aspiring Actor” and you can advance yourself all the way to “Movie God” and each higher rank comes with more benefits. The benefits of ranking the highest have not been announced yet. I’m not sure how many people will actually get there because you must have over 5,000 points to be a “Movie God” and all you get is the satisfaction of being at the top.

FilmCrave is a good idea and the site is put together rather well. All lists are viewable and you are able to add movies from anyone’s list to your own list, which makes putting lists together much easier than trying to think of every movie you’ve ever watched. They also feature upcoming movies which I think will make FilmCrave a hot target for preview advertisements. Check out FilmCrave.

Vongo: Video On The Go

Posted on 01 November 2007 by JoCoWash

I am a subscriber to Blockbuster’s online rental service, which is great, but some people just don’t like waiting. There are a few solutions to this problem; one is called Vongo (Video on the go). Don’t let late fees and late night runs to the video store interrupt your life ever again.

Vongo offers more than 2500 popular movies including many Walt Disney films. Unlike the other movie download services (CinemaNow and Movielink,) this is the only service that does not offer movie purchases. It is just rentals. In addition, Vongo requires you to register and download their software before you can start browsing their movies.

After Vongo’s 8-step registration process, I was up and running. The Vongo application is elegant and simple to use (although some beg to differ.) The download manager is also very smart. It’ll happily run in the background as a tray icon and inform you of your download status. Vongo is also able to streamline the searching and downloading process because they have their own desktop application.

Vongo sets itself apart from the competition with its rental-only subscription. For $9.99 per month you get unlimited access, as well as access to stream the Starz TV channel. Just browse the catalog and download until you get an error message telling you that there isn’t any hard drive space left! Each title has an “available until” date, at which time the content you’ve downloaded will automatically expire. One thing that gets me is the fact that you have to pay for newer video even though you pay $9.99/month. These titles are called “pay-per-view.” Once these titles are started you have 24 hours to view the content, after which the movie expires.

Bad News: Video quality is not great. Full-screen mode is poor quality. The audio often didn’t synch up with the lip movement. Once I watched it in window mode it was much better, but it still wasn’t the same video quality as watching a DVD on my computer. I was a bit disappointed in that aspect. I am picky, though. You may find the video quality to be just fine. You’ll have to try it yourself.

Good News: Vongo offers a free 14-day trial of their subscription option, as well as convenient gift cards so you can give a film away as a gift.

Vongo is a great serive, but before I try them again they are going to have to get video quality up to par, drop the “pay-per-view” for paying customers, and add a few more movie titles. Most of the movies I looked for were just not there.
