It has all gone to the dogs! Dogster Review

Posted on 29 October 2007 by T.W. Garrett

If you haven’t heard of this Website, you might be surprised to know that your dog is using your computer while you are away to blog, post pictures and meet new doggy friends on Dogster.

Dogster is a social networking site for your dog – yes – your dog. Before anyone goes down-talking the idea, so far, it has been pretty successful with 337,505 members and that number increases each day. The site lets you do quite a bit by designing a Web page for your dog, enter your pup in photo contests, enter comments in the dog blog and there is even a chance that your pooch can be the “Dog of the Day”.

Besides having way too much time, there is no doubt that users of Dogster have love for their furry friends. However, the site is detailed and provides many options to view the community around them and offers the chance meet others in the area who have a strong interests in pets as well. You can go to Dogster for answers to common animal ailments, watch videos, get information on certain breeds and even buy doggie goods at the Dogster store. You can even adopt a dog on Dogster and I think that is a wonderful thing to offer.

Dogster is basically free but you can upgrade your account to DogsterPlus, which allows you to post more pictures, etc. Upgrading doesn’t seem necessary but I’m sure some have chosen to do it. And if you are not particularly a dog fanatic – they have a Catster as well and you can be a part of both for no additional cost.

Google docs goes mobile

Posted on 17 October 2007 by TheGrizz

I reviewed Google docs about three weeks ago when the tech brief first opened, at the time I really didn’t think I would have a reason to look back at this neat little application brought to us by Google. It is now very apparent that I was wrong, Google has just released a new option to the popular Google docs, Google docs mobile. Now not only can you create spread sheets, word documents and other such things with your team or friends on the internet you can now have it available from your hand held computer device as well.

I suppose I may be kind of weird, but this little addition to the already awesome Google docs family really makes me happy. Now if for some reason I can’t be at my computer, I can still be in touch with the various documents that I have stored on Google docs with Google docs mobile. While the mobile version is somewhat slimed down you can still access everything you could while online. It does take some getting used to as far as learning to navigate without a mouse, but it is a small price to pay for being able to take this handy little application anywhere you can use your hand held device.

While I am sure that there are some issues with this new application somewhere I am as yet unable to find any, however if you do find some please let me know via comment or email.

Never forget the milk with RTM

Posted on 17 October 2007 by TheGrizz

I like everyone else has had a time when they could really use something to keep track of what they had to do, where they had to do it, and when it was supposed to be done. This task used to be the job of data planners and other hand held scheduling devices; however I had always wondered when task management would finally come to the web. That time is now, and Remember The Milk (RTM) is one such application.

this application is a wonderful find, finally I have an online tool that I can use to manage my time more effectively. I can now assign not only the tasks I need to complete and when I need to complete them, but I can also set priorities to make sure I know what tasks are the most important.
I will be honest; my biggest fear when I found this nifty little application is that it would be another tool that promised to make my life simpler while actually creating a situation where I had to spend more time using it then actually getting stuff done. To my joy and surprise RTM is no such thing. It only takes moments to enter the information into a variety of customizable fields and bam! You’re tasks are now organized by date, time, and priority.
Another fear I had was that the interface would be overly complicated requiring me to input the same information in multiple fields. Again this was not the case, the interface is incredibly user friendly and almost anyone can get up and going with this app quickly and easily.
The only real negative I have about this site is that it has a rather boring appearance, but given the nature of its function I can let this go. Besides the program is still in Beta and I am sure they will release a much smoother and flashier program soon.

You can sign up for RTM free at http://www.rememberthemilk.com

Bypass Initial Contact with Realtors at HouseFront.com

Posted on 16 October 2007 by T.W. Garrett

If anyone is in the market for a new home or if you are just curious about what your neighbor’s home is worth, Housefront.com is worth checking out. Chances are, if you have bought, sold or considered either one – you have had to deal with a realtor in order to get any information about property. Housefront allows you to get realty information on over 100 million U.S. homes without the hassle of contacting a realtor for small questions you may have such as; “what is this home worth?”

On HouseFront.com you are able to type in any address and get information regarding the estimated value, number of bed/baths, lot size, year built, square footage and in many cases you can see the names of the people who owned the home previously and who currently owns it as well.

In addition, HouseFront.com offers Google interactive maps, when you search for a home – you can see a satellite image of the property and surrounding areas.

Once you are viewing a home that interests you, there is a tab for “Comparable Properties” which allows you to view homes that are similar in options and price range. This is a really nice feature if you are looking to sell your home or if you are planning to buy within a specific price range.

The most useful aspect about HouseFront.com is that it is designed to work easily with your mobile phone. Picture this…you are out on a scenic, Sunday drive and you pass a home that you have wanted your whole life and it has a “For Sale by Owner” sign in the driveway. You can text the address of the home to “HOUSE” or 46873 and HouseFront will instantly send you all of the statistics on the house without you having to wait to contact the seller. And once you do contact the seller, you will be educated on what the house is worth and what is seller previously bought it for. That is very useful information in the world of realty.

Ultimately, all of the homes that you request information for through your cell phone are neatly organized on your personal HouseFront.com page so once you get home; you can view it all on your computer as well. HouseFront.com is free and is worth trying out even if you aren’t in the market for a new home. It is always fun to look up your own home – fair warning – you may be surprised!

Scrybe–Pretty, Powerful Organizing

Posted on 15 October 2007 by Nion

So you’re ready to jump on the online organizing bandwagon, but you’re not sure which one to pick? First, take a moment to assess your needs; if you need to be able to keep a calendar of your tasks, a place to take notes, and the ability to share without being committed to a social network, Scrybe might be the organizer for you.Whether you’re detailed or vague, Scrybe will support you’re note-taking style. Organize your Planner by keeping separate lists for related tasks and set dates, times, and reminders for the things you need to complete. Add important events directly to your calendar and view it by the year, month, week, or day. If you need to finish doing something else when you receive a reminder, snooze the event so that you don’t forget about it. Use your ThoughtPad to jot down quick notes or enhance your brainstorming with links, photos, and video. Create your own labels to enable sharing of tasks and notes and enable OfflineSync to continue using Scrybe even if you’re offline. When you’re done updating Scrybe for the day you can print it out with PaperSync.

Scrybe is ideal for anyone who wants a straight to the point organizer. While you are free to share your tasks, invite contacts, and–in future versions–assign tasks to others, Scrybe isn’t built around a social network. Plus, since it utilizes special printing formats, Scrybe can be used to create or enhance a physical planner.

Scrybe, in addition to being a very functional organizer, is a great looking web application. It’s no shock that it’s receiving lots of extremely positive reviews. It is currently invite only, but to learn more visit iscrybe.com.

If you need an invite, leave a comment below.
