Remember the Milk Update (just when you thought it couldn’t get better)

I did a review of Remember the milk a few months ago and at the time I raved about how awesome I thought it was. Now it looks like RTM has decided to improve itself. How you are asking? Well they now allow you to link RTM directly to your GMail account. This means that you can pretty much do anything you would want on RTM directly from Gmail. You can assign tasks, remove tasks, send reminders, well pretty much do it all from gmail. It does take a download which you can get here, and you can only use the firefox web browser with it at the moment.

I am personally very excited about this latest update for Remember the Milk and think that it takes two great functions and combines them into one. In fact one of the only complaints I have had about most of the task management applications available is that while you could be emailed reminders you couldn’t set reminders, or do other things from email, but now you can with this update.

Some of the more useful things you can to with this plug in

Manage your tasks:

When you install the plugin there will be a task management pane on the right of your gmail. From here you can manage your tasks just as if you were logged into RTM, but from gmail. This is a great feature, now I don’t have to have multiple URL’s opened when I am dealing with scheduling.

Connect Tasks with specific emails:

Now when you get an email that has something you want to remember to do, or that you want to reply to at a certain time or after you have completed a task. Simply add the email as a task and it will remind you too take the action you when you mean too. I really like this, now I don’t have to worry about forgetting that I needed to email so and so and such and such a time.

You can read more about this fantastic plugin here.

Combine it all with Jott

When I was first pointed to Jott I thought to myself ‘great another task management program’ but me being me combined with the fact that I actually dig the whole Task Management movement I went and checked it out. Well I am more than pleasantly surprised. This little website kicks some serious butt! While it is indeed another in the long list of task management applications on the web, it truly sets itself apart by allowing you to combine other sites you may use ranging from twitter to remember the milk and even xpenser. This is why I really like this site. Now I can simply make a phone call, tell Jott what I want to remember and it will all go to the right place and remind me in the way I want to be reminded. This is pure genius.

Basically you sign up for the site (which is free) and then make a phone call, during the phone call you will follow some directions and then you are all ready to Jott. Now normally I wouldn’t be a big fan of this extra step. I am a big fan of the whole KISS theory, however given the fact I can link this task management system with others that I already use such as Remember the Milk and Xpenser, the phone call is actually something that makes everything work better. Now I can Jott it and get the reminder in my email from RMT and the money I spent from xpenser. All in all this program is almost a must use if you are using other task management services.

Get Uber with Ubernote

Posted on 16 December 2007 by TheGrizz

One of the best parts about writing for the brief is that I get the opportunity to try out all kinds of stuff. Another good part is then if I like it I can say so, and if I don’t like it I can say that too. However there are times when it is a little tough, specially when you look at a site that does almost the same exact thing as other sites out there do. But enough about my personal problems and on to the review.

Ubernote is yet another offering in the task management, note taking website area similar to Remember the Milk and other such sites. However I like these sites, so I like Ubernote as well. Plus it just has a real neat name and the starting of a community, which is actually where the biggest difference exists in Ubernote. It seems that today almost everyone wants to start a website, and more often than not those websites copy another website, but while Ubernote does provide a very similar service to other sites, it has a very active forum area that shows that there is more to Ubernote than its function. If there is a reason to use Ubernote over other similar offerings it is the fact it has a fledgling community. I hope they encourage this community and use it as a way to really make Ubernote a unique place to visit.

Synchronize your notes with sync notes

Posted on 20 November 2007 by TheGrizz

Why is it that every time someone comes up with a good idea, everyone else takes the same idea, claims they have made it better and then puts out the exact same thing that everyone else has? That is exactly the question I had to ask myself about Sync notes. Sync notes is yet another offering to the desktop note taking market that bills itself as “Your notes, anywhere, anyhow” and really fails to provide any real reason to use them. However other than the fact that there is really nothing unique or new about syncnotes, it does do its job well.

I have covered many similar applications such as remember the milk and Mojonote, who all promise to make my life simpler by allowing me a one stop source for all my note taking/task mangement needs. What I am starting to find out slowly though is that for the most part one is as good as another. They all allow you to post your notes online, and by cell phone (provided of course it has some form of internet connection). However one interesting feature of Syncnote is that it has a downloadable desktop application (much like microsoft offices one note). This may actually be its one feature that makes it worth getting over all the other note taking applications out there.

Lets say you are writing on your desktop, a friend calls and tells you they have moved to a new address, simply open up the syncnote icon, type in your note, press the synchronize note button and it will appear online. Now admitted it would be just as easy to simply open your browser go to a bookmarked syncnote page and enter it there, but the honest truth is that there are times where internet is actually not available (which also kind of makes the synchronizing button a bit of a waste).

Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate syncnotes, I actually think that it is a good application, I just wish it were a little more inovative and offered something to make it stand out in the crowd. So in the end if you are looking for a solid note taking application, give syncnotes a try here.

Mojonote is Mojogood

Posted on 19 November 2007 by TheGrizz

Have you ever had one of those days that you seemed to forget just about everything that you had to do? I know I have had a lot of them (and that’s not counting when I do it on purpose), luckily however there is a way to remind yourself of what you have to do and when you have to do it available online. These services are called Task Management applications, and their main purpose is to give you a place to list all the things you have to do and then remind you about them.

Back in October I reviewed Remember the Milk and was really impressed with it. So impressed in fact that I had pretty much decided that it was really the only task management application out there that was worth using. Well as is often the case, I was wrong. I recently ran across mojonote.com and I got to tell you this little task management app may not be the prettiest, it may not be the biggest, but it is seriously one of the easiest to use apps out there.

First you sign up (which as with most task management apps is free) and then select if you want to set up tasks, lists, or notes, input the information hit enter and you are done. That simple. Not only that you can set up multiple lists, different dates (which are emailed to you in order to remind you) and as many notes as you want. However while it is good, there is a problem with it. You can’t automatically reschedule your tasks, so if you got something you want to be reminded to do every day, you have to input it for every day. But really this is really a small complaint given how easy the site is to use, so if you are looking for a task management application take a swing over to mojonote and check it out.
